It is essential that counselors safeguard the welfare of their clients by using techniques/procedures/modalities that are grounded in theory and those which have an empirical or scientific basis - as stated in the 2014 ÀÖ²©´«Ã½Code of Ethics. Because reparative therapy does not meet these guidelines, and because of the potential harm it poses to clients, the ÀÖ²©´«Ã½Governing Council issued an official statement of opposition in 1999.
We hope that elected officials in Texas will follow the example set by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who barred minors from being subjected to this procedure.
